I recently attended an excellent session at the Cape Cod Institute by Bob Marshak, who explored tips and techniques for overcoming the many covert barriers to organizational change. The examples used throughout the session were geared primarily to groups who worked side by side, when it’s tough enough to identify those hidden landmines and unspoken issues. But when teams can’t read body language and have limited communications, understanding where the barriers are hidden becomes so much harder. I’d love to hear from readers who can share ideas about how best to safely uncover barriers to change when working as a virtual team.
For people who work as part of global teams, Marshak’s new book, Organizational Change: Views from the Edge (published by the Lewin Center), includes a fascinating view of the ways Eastern and Western cultures view change differently. I also picked up The World Café: Shaping Our Futures Through Conversations That Matter by Juanita Brown, my interest spurred by a recent Facilitate Proceedings post.
